Why Do We Worship the Way We Do?

At Berea Reformed Evangelical Church we do similar things that are done in many (moderately liturgical) traditional Protestant and Evangelical churches. We sing hymns and Psalms, we pray and confess our sins together, “Covenant Renewal Worship” is not a code word for some odd method of worship that sets us apart like a sect from the rest of the faith. Rather, we emphasize covenant renewal in our understanding of worship because that is our understanding of what all these traditional elements of historical Christian worship services are really all about. The main purpose of worship as we understand it is to renew covenant with God. In doing so, we do all the “usual” things (though today in the modern church, some of these things are becoming less “usual”): songs, prayers, corporate confessions of sin and faith, Scripture readings, a sermon, Communion, etc. But the thing that gives these things their meaning and that organizes what we are doing into a cohesive whole is the renewal of our covenantal relationship with our gracious, covenant-making God. Browse the articles below if you want to know more about the vision of worship that we are trying to implement here at Berea Reformed.
